| Abstract | The mortality impacts of hot and cold temperatures have been thoroughly documented, with most locations reporting a U-shaped relationship with a minimum mortality temperature (MMT) at which mortality is lowest. We interpolate the MMT's from peer-reviewed literature from 96 cities distributed globally based on the correlation analysis between MMT's and the independent variable 30-year mean temperature, the 30-year average of the annual amplitude and the distance to coast. A linear regression between MMT's and the mentioned variables yielded an R2 of 0.77 at the < 0.001 confidence level. Other independent variables such as population density and urban are were also tested but their inclusion did not substantially improve the fit. The results refer to the distribution of MMT's for the present, no inferences on the evolution of MMT's for the future is made. |
